The Supernatural Church Will Display God’s Glory Through Signs, Wonders and Miracles

Do you believe miracles still occur?

For many Christians, the answer to that question is a decided, “No.” These well-meaning believers have accepted the enemy’s lie that signs and wonders ended with the apostles. They have read the Bible and convinced themselves that they couldn’t possibly have a supernatural experience in this day and age. They have discounted that God, in all His glory, is still a miracle-working God. Thankfully, not only can God still work miracles through the Body of Christ, but He desires to.

Why Does God Desire to Work Miracles?

God is supernatural. He is still the same God who created the heavens and the earth out of nothing but His words. He is still the same God who breathed life into man and fashioned woman out of man. He is the still the same God who parted the Red Sea and brought the Israelites out of Egypt. He is still the same God who sent His Son to die for all the sins of mankind. He is still the same God who raised that Son from the dead and defeated Satan’s hold on creation. He is still the same God who has called each believer into a right relationship with Himself, and He is still the same God who continues to work in and through the lives of His people.

As His people, we have the awesome right and responsibility to walk in that same miracle-working power. We are called to be supernatural, too. In the book of Acts, after Jesus’ ascension, the apostles and other believers were waiting together for a sign from the Lord, telling them what to do next.

“And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. (Acts 4:29-31)

Those believers petitioned God to give them the ability to preach the gospel with power and to work miracles through signs and wonders. They weren’t simply asking the Lord to help them preach a better sermon or do good in the world. No, they wanted the power of God to invade their lives so that they could share God’s goodness and love in dramatic ways—healings, deliverances, provision and more. They desired the supernatural.

What Does It Mean to Be Supernatural?

Supernatural means above natural laws and beyond the ordinary. This is what Jesus did when He performed miracles. He:

  • Healed the sick –Matthew 8:1-13, 12:10-13
  • Delivered the bound –Mark 1:23-28; Matthew 15:21-28
  • Fed the hungry –Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 8:1-9
  • Provided for the needy –Matthew 17:27
  • Raised the dead –Luke 7:11-16; John 11:19-44

He was walking in the supernatural!

In Joel 2:28, God promised that His people would perform those same kinds of supernatural acts: “I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions.”

This is what is available to us as believers if we will invite the Holy Spirit to work in and through us. The supernatural move of God is what separates the Church from simply being another civic organization. Well-meaning outreaches are good. God tells us to feed the poor, care for the widows and orphans and help those in need, but our efforts are compounded—they become supernatural—when the Holy Spirit is invited to get involved (Exodus 33:16).

Why Is the Supernatural Important?

Mature believers who have experienced the supernatural power of God must share the truth of it and how to walk in it with this next generation. If we don’t, the enemy will introduce them to counterfeit experiences. He will try to draw them away from God and Spirit-directed signs and wonders with false power.

As we learned earlier, it bears repeating that the Holy Spirit compounds our efforts. All our good and noble and diligent work will never equal God-ordained miracles. With the Holy Spirit, the Body of Christ will always be the strongest and most effective at sharing the gospel and meeting needs.

Jesus promised in John 14:12: “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.” You are part of the supernatural Church. The Holy Spirit can work through you to do all that Jesus did and more. You can heal the sick, deliver the bound, feed the hungry, provide for the needy, raise the dead and even more. It won’t be by your strength but by His. The only requirement is that you allow the Holy Spirit to work through you.

If you want to learn how to operate in the supernatural, begin studying the life of Christ and the lives of the apostles. Examine how they lived and the miracles they performed. Then pray and invite the Holy Spirit to work in and through you in a similar way. Begin spending time in prayer. Listen for the Holy Spirit’s voice and obey His leading. You may also benefit from finding a respected mentor or church leader to guide you. If you don’t know one, check out the list of Partner Churches in your area. Let this be the beginning of a new life where signs and wonders aren’t the exception but rather the norm.
